History & Origin

Brought to Iceland by Norse settlers in the 9th century. Due to a strict ban on horse imports since 982 AD, the breed has been purebred for over 1,000 years.

Feeding & Dietary Needs

Adapted to dry mountain lichens and scrub. Does poorly on rich clover pasture. Requires dense Timothy hay and basic minerals.
