History & Origin

Developed in the northeastern US in the 19th century. Named because horses had to reach a certain speed 'standard' to be registered.

Feeding & Dietary Needs

Raced Standardbreds require massive starch-fat feeds. Retired Standardbreds do wonderfully on simple orchard grass hay and lightweight ration balancers.
